Student Homestay
Homestay accommodation is when a student lives in a New Zealand home as a member of the family. Students like homestay accommodation as they get to share a family's home, culture and lifestyle. Be assured that you will not be considered a boarder or flatmate. You will be expected to be included in family occasions, celebrations and daily life. The family will help you to learn new customs, will speak to you in English and teach you about the ‘Kiwi’ way of life. You will learn to become independent and responsible for yourself during your time with your host family. The family is there to support you in every way possible. They will provide you with your own room and a desk to use for your study. Your family will also show you around their neighbourhood. Homestay Providers offer 7 day a week care and 3 Meals per day. ILP’s Home Stay Co-ordinator and Counsellor is also available to help you and to make sure you are happy and well cared for.
Fun things to do with your host family
Share some of your photos from home
Let them know of your home life in your own country
Tell them about your travel experiences
Help your host family to speak phrases in your own language
Maybe cook a meal from your own country for them to experience
The Home Stay family will explain the house routines to you including:
The time family members get up or go to bed
Times for meals
Using the bathroom
Making your own meals
Washing and cleaning of clothes and room
The New Plymouth Residents whom ILP have on their list wishing to provide International Students with a Homestay experience will have undergone a Criminal Records check through the Ministry of Justice and the student accommodation will be assessed as suitable before a student is introduced to the Provider. We endeavour to find Safe, comfortable Host families who provide a welcoming and caring environment for our students meeting the criteria set by New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and International Homestay Guidelines.
Before you arrive in New Zealand you should have received the name and address of the home stay family you are to live with, along with details of pets and family members. It is a very good idea to email or write to the host family to introduce yourself.
Payment
An invoice will be sent to you before you arrive in New Zealand for 12 weeks home stay and payment is required before you get to New Zealand. Costs are $180 - $200 per week
Student Hostels
Student Hostels have single or twin rooms and bed linen and cleaning is provided. Rooms are heated in winter. Meals are usually eaten in a communal dining area to enable students to mix together and to get to know one another. A Hostel Manager/Supervisor lives on site and social and sporting activities are organised for residents. Hostels usually have a computer and recreation room. A study area is usually provided. Some hostels are “self catering” where students have their own bedrooms and share a kitchen and living room. Special dietary needs can be catered for. Laundry facilities will also be available. Hostels are located very close to the Central Business District (CBD) and several within walking distance of great recreational facilities at our local Y.M.C.A and two local privately owned Gyms. Cost from $200 per week
Flats/Houses for Rental
Real Estate Agents handle Houses/flats for rental they can be two or three bedroom homes furnished or unfurnished. Prices fluctuate depending on location to the Central Business District (CBD). The closer to the CBD the more expensive they are. A substantial bond is required, plus 2 – 4 weeks rent in advance. It is possible several students could combine and reach an agreement to flat together. It must be realised that there are many hidden additional costs, Telephone, Power, Gas Heating, Food, and Transportation to Campus etc. A lot of responsibility if you are unaware of the financial standing of your potential flat mates. Ranging from $200 to $500 a week
