Insurance For International Students
Eligibilty for Health Services
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly–funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website.
Accident and Medical Costs
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website.
Medical and Travel Insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand and so ILP Education and Training Ltd requires all international students to purchase personal, medical and travel insurance from a reputable insurance company before arriving in New Zealand to undertake a course of study.
The NZ Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students also requires international students to have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.
Requirements
All students are required to purchase personal, medical and travel insurance for the duration of their planned study, as specified in The NZ Code of Practice.
The purchase of insurance must be made before the student leaves their home country.
The insurance policy must not expire while the student is in New Zealand.
Students are to provide to ILP Education and Training Ltd a copy of their insurance policy in English so ILP can establish that the policy adequately covers the student for their stay in New Zealand.
A student may choose to purchase the insurance from a New Zealand insurance company. If this is undertaken, the insurance still needs to be purchased before the student arrives in New Zealand, not after.
For each year of study, the student is to have a current insurance policy. If a policy is for one year and the student will be re-enrolling with ILP, the student must re-new the policy before returning to New Zealand.
When a student renews a policy for another year of study, a copy of the policy in English must be provided again to ILP.
Verification of Insurance Policies
ILP Education and Training Ltd will undertake to verify policies prior to student arrival in New Zealand. This will include:
Ensuring the insurer is a reputable and established company with substantial experience in the Travel Insurance business, and has a credit rating no lower than A from Standard and Poors, or B+ from A M Best.
The Insurer is able to provide emergency 24-hour, 7 day per week cover.
Students have “policy wording” document from the Insurance company stating that the student has purchased the cover for the duration of the planned period of study. The certificate and policy working must also detail medical sums insured and benefits. Where a student is not in possession of an appropriate and current medical and travel insurance policy ILP will:
Advise the student of the medical and travel insurance requirement as per the NZ Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.
Inform the student that they will not be allowed to study in New Zealand without the purchase of insurance.
Provide the student with contact details of New Zealand based insurance companies that have been identified as providing appropriate policies for international students.
Recording of Students Policy Details
ILP will record the following details for each policy purchased by students:
The name of the Insurer (business name)
The headquarters and branch address of the insurer (where insurance was purchased)
The Policy number
The Policy start and end dates
That a copy of the policy has been photocopied and filed
Renewal of Policies
ILP will issue a reminder to each student whose insurance policy will be expiring to remind them to renewal the policy if they are return to undertake further study
