I have always loved plants, animals, people and the natural sciences. Sciences are of great interest, as I have an insatiable desire to know how and why things work.
To further these interests I studied in the environmental sciences field, qualifying in Horticulture, and have since worked in numerous fields within the horticulture industry.
I have been fortunate to have gained experience in amenities horticulture, plant breeding, plant propagation, nursery production horticulture, landscape design, retail, commercial nurseries and botanical gardens. Within these fields I particularly enjoyed supervising and training the people that worked within my teams helping them to further their skills. Watching their confidence and self-esteem grow was a great joy for me.
I have taught various pruning and horticultural programmes through an independent training provider before, and found it a very fulfilling experience. So when the opportunity to join Onsite Education arose, I decided that I was in need of change and diversification, as I do enjoy the opportunity to extend my life experience.
My interests and passions are forever expanding, with the focus now turning towards people. The different backgrounds, perceptions, different ways of communicating ideas/thoughts and the learning styles that people have, fascinate me.
I firmly believe life-long learning and developing ones’ interests are of paramount importance, as this helps one to grow as a person. With this in mind, I hope that in a small way, I can help and encourage others to grow and achieve their ambitions.

After 14 years working in a Christchurch printing factory my wife Katrina and I decided we needed a change in lifestyle.
5 years ago after my studies in Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University were complete, we moved to Blenheim where I have worked managing vineyards since. I am currently the Vineyard Manager for Huia Vineyards, a small quality focused boutique wine company.
We all love living in Marlborough and I wanted to help contribute to the quality of Viticulture in our region, hence my part time tutoring role with Onsite Education.

My background is one of Agriculture, starting when I left school and worked on different stations to gain valuable experience and the appropriate qualification which provided me with the knowledge to manage a farming enterprise.
Prior to moving to Hawke’s Bay I managed a 5500 acre property in the Wairarapa for a number of years. When my children needed to go to secondary school the family moved north to Hawke’s Bay and I managed an 1800 acre intensive sheep and beef property north of Napier for 15 years.
I became involved in tutoring in agriculture because I have had an interest in assisting young people gain the know-how about agriculture. I have now been involved in tutoring for 15 years.
I have also had to diversify my knowledge and up-skill in the Horticulture and Viticulture sectors as there is a need to train people for these industries.

Role: Practical Assessor After leaving college I began my studies in Agriculture completing the Federated Farmers Cadet Scheme which consisted of a five-year apprenticeship on various farms in the Hawkes Bay. Over the years I have worked in various farm positions with a range of different livestock including Beef, Sheep and Deer. Most recently I have spent over 10 years as manager for Maewa Stations 461ha property. Being a committed family man I have always shown an interest in my three children’s education and have served on two school boards being Primary and Intermediate level. I have also served on the NZSTA Central West Executive for a number of years. I am a firm believer that all children have the ability to learn regardless of their socio-economic background and have worked alongside the staff and board at the schools to try and achieve this.
