Delivery Sites: Marlborough & Hawkes Bay.
Available in other sites when sufficient numbers to commence intake.
Aim and Outcome of programme:
The purpose of this programme is to allow the students to further their practical ability and theoretical knowledge in order to gain a higher degree of understanding of the viticulture industry and to advance their career within the industry.
Entry Requirements:
Open entry.
Enthusiasm for and interest in vineyard related activities.
Previous or current employment within the Viticulture industry.
(Onsite Education intends to ensure that all students wishing to enrol on this programme have access to a site whereby practical training can be offered to those not currently employed within the Viticulture industry).
Fees:
Domestic students: $ 500.00 + course text books
International students: $12,000.00 + administration fee $180.00 + course text books
Content:
Compulsory:
Viticulture Fundamentals VL301
Purpose: To offer students basic theory knowledge in daily operations undertaken in the vineyard incorporating Health and Safety, Botany, Irrigation and Record Keeping.
Vineyard Husbandry VL302
Purpose: To formalise the basic practical skills attained in the vineyard together with forming the foundation of a Viticulture career.
Vineyard Operations VL401
Purpose: This block is aimed at developing record keeping skills along with “best practice” pest and disease monitoring and control procedures. Students will also be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of frost control methods, yield estimation and plant processes and life cycles.
Electives: Two required – Elective A or Elective B and Elective C or Elective D
Elective A: Hazard Management VL303
Purpose: To offer students an understanding of workplace hazards and methods to detect, reduce or eliminate further hazards.
Elective B: Soil Science VL304
Purpose: To offer students basic theory knowledge in plant processes and soil structure and properties.
Elective C: Supervisory Skills VL 403
Purpose: This course is designed to empower the students with skills to supervise a group of workers and to communicate the requirements of a task to see it through to successful completion.
Elective D: Advanced Vineyard Machinery VL404
Purpose: This course provides students with the necessary theory and practical skills to operate specialist vineyard machinery including a grape harvester.
